Practical guide

Understanding image resizing.

Learn how image dimensions work, when to resize, and how to keep your pictures looking their best.

What image resizing means

Image resizing changes the physical pixel grid of a picture — its width and height measured in pixels (for example, from 4000 × 3000 px down to 1200 × 900 px). This is different from file size in KB or MB, which measures how much storage space the encoded file uses on disk. Reducing pixel dimensions naturally lowers the number of pixels stored, which often reduces file size as well.

Pixels vs. percentages

Pixel resizing targets specific dimensions or maximum bounds — ideal when a website, blog column, or upload form asks for a known width such as 1200 px. Percentage resizing scales every image relative to its own starting size: for example, a 50% scale turns a 4000 × 3000 px photo into 2000 × 1500 px while turning a 1200 × 800 px graphic into 600 × 400 px in the same batch.

Aspect ratio and image quality

An image's aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between its width and height (such as 4:3, 16:9, or 1:1). Keeping aspect ratio locked prevents faces, products, and typography from looking stretched or squished. Keep in mind that enlarging a small image to higher pixel dimensions interpolates existing pixels rather than recreating missing camera detail, so starting from a high-resolution original produces the sharpest results.

Choosing the right image dimensions

  • • Square (1:1): Great for profile pictures, product catalog tiles, and square feed posts (512 × 512 or 1080 × 1080 px).
  • • Portrait (4:5 & 9:16): Suited for vertical mobile posts (1080 × 1350 px) and full-screen stories (1080 × 1920 px).
  • • Landscape & Web: Standard 16:9 widescreen (1280 × 720 or 1920 × 1080 px) and link preview cards (1200 × 630 px). If a destination platform also enforces a strict KB limit, you can pair resizing with the Pockenta Image Compressor.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Helpful answers.

How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Keep the aspect ratio locked and use Fit to preserve the image’s proportions. Enter the desired width or height and review the dimensions before resizing. Use Fill only when you want to cover an exact frame and accept that some edges may be cropped.

What's the difference between Fit, Fill and Stretch?

Fit keeps the whole image inside your requested bounds without changing its proportions. Fill covers an exact frame by cropping excess edges. Stretch uses the specified width and height directly, which can distort an image when the new proportions differ from the original.

Can I resize images by percentage?

Percentage mode scales each image relative to its own original dimensions. A value below 100% makes it smaller; a value above 100% requests enlargement. Enlargement protection can prevent upscaling, and enlarging an image cannot restore detail that was never captured.

How do I resize images for social media dimensions?

Choose a preset with the dimensions your destination requires, or enter a custom width and height. Square Post, Portrait Post, Vertical Story and HD Landscape are useful starting points. Check the destination’s current requirements, and choose Fit or Fill depending on whether you want to preserve the whole image or cover the frame.

Why can a resized image have a larger file size?

Pixel dimensions and file size measure different things. A resized image is re-encoded, and its format, quality setting and content can produce more bytes even when the dimensions are smaller. Check the downloaded size and use the Image Compressor if you need to reduce it further.
