Practical guide

Understanding image compression.

How compression reduces file sizes, when to choose lossy or lossless settings, and which format fits your workflow.

What image compression means

Image files store millions of color values plus optional metadata such as camera settings and color profiles. Compression encodes those pixel patterns more compactly so pages load faster, emails send cleanly, and storage space goes further — all while keeping the same pixel dimensions.

Lossy vs. lossless compression

Lossy compression (used by JPEG, WebP, and optional PNG palette reduction) selectively simplifies subtle color variations that the human eye barely notices, achieving much smaller files. Lossless compression preserves every pixel exactly as-is by stripping unneeded metadata and repacking data streams, resulting in modest but bit-exact savings.

Why compressed images may look different — or stay the same size

Pushing quality settings very low (or setting a tight KB target on a high-resolution photo) introduces softness or block artifacts around sharp edges and gradients. Conversely, if an image was already heavily optimized by another app, re-encoding it may not reduce its size further — in that case, Pockenta automatically keeps your smaller original file.

When to use JPEG, PNG, or WebP

  • • JPEG (JPG): Best for photographs and realistic scenes without transparency.
  • • PNG: Best for logos, UI screenshots, crisp text graphics, and images requiring alpha transparency.
  • • WebP: Ideal for modern websites, supporting both photographic compression and smooth transparency at smaller file sizes.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Helpful answers.

How do I compress an image to a specific KB or MB size?

Choose Target File Size, enter the size you want and select KB or MB. The compressor looks for a suitable result while keeping pixel dimensions. Some images cannot reach that size; the result will explain when the closest achievable output is used.

What's the difference between quality compression and target file size?

Quality Level lets you choose a quality setting; the resulting file size depends on the image and format. Target File Size searches for settings that approach your chosen size. Lower lossy quality can remove visible detail, so compare the result before saving it.

Why did my image not become smaller?

An image that is already well optimized may not shrink further with the selected settings. If the processed version would be as large as or larger than the source, the compressor keeps the smaller original. Its original metadata also remains when that file is kept unchanged.

Can I compress PNG without losing transparency?

PNG compression preserves supported transparency in both Lossless and Lossy Palette modes. Lossless avoids changing pixel values, while Lossy Palette reduces colors and can affect fine detail or gradients. Preview the result, especially around soft transparent edges.

Can I compress several images and download a ZIP?

Select several supported JPG, PNG or WebP images and apply the batch compression settings. You can save completed images individually or together as a ZIP. The batch and archive limits shown by the tool still apply, and an ineligible file may need to be removed or replaced.
